Several new small businesses continue to open in Doniphan County, keeping the Chamber of Commerce busy welcoming them into the community. Some owners new to the area, others have envisioned the opportunity and finally get to make it happen.
The Doniphan County Chamber of Commerce celebrated Rookie’s Sports Bar & Grill Restaurant in Troy, Glacial Hills Venues and Cyclone Auto & Tire in Wathena on November 20, with red ribbon cutting ceremonies.
Rookie’s Sports Bar & Grill located at 412 W. Locust St., Troy, KS, opened earlier this year by new owners Jeremy and Megan Eppens and managed by Kelli Rodgers. They are open from Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. through midnight, on Fridays and Saturdays their hours change to 11-2 a.m. and on Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.
Rookie’s family friendly restaurant and full-service bar and grill offers daily evening meal specials, which change every few months, trivia night, happy hour and their most popular menu items include tenderloin and ice-cold beer. Starving to try their food? Be sure to ask them about their “Trojan Horse Challenge.”

Kay Hewins, owner of the new Glacial Hills Venues in Wathena, KS, made it her mission to take a forgotten building and turn it into an event space.
“I’ve always wanted to fix that place up, but the building wasn’t on the market. When the previous owner was finally willing to sell, I couldn’t wait to bring that building to life,” said Hewins.
After several months of renovations, Hewins’s dream turned reality as the new Glacial Hills Venues event center now shines on the east edge of town along Highway 36.
“Although the inside is complete to have events, I’m still working on adding more details to the outside areas like the covered patio and the grass area in the back,” she said.
If you are planning a family gathering, party, reception or corporate event in the near future, check out Glacial Hills Venues online at www.glacialhillsvenues.com or on their Facebook page for event pictures and more information about booking the space.
