<p>The Highland Community College Athletic Department is bringing in Mark Potter, long time basketball coach at Newman University (Wichita, KS), to talk about mental health and wellness. Coach Potter provides a real and relevant story on this topic as he suffered through severe depression during his coaching career. He now travels the country talking to students, athletes, teachers, administrators and coaches about this very important topic and how we can help battle the epidemic of mental illness.</p>
<p>The presentation is set for January 22 at 7 pm in the Culbertson Auditorium on the Highland, KS campus of HCC. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.</p>
<p>Dedicated to Uncommon Principles (D2UP) is a non-profit dedicated to sharing stories of victory and ways to help coaches, athletes, students, educators, and administrators reach their greatest potential. They relate practical ideas to help everyone train their brain and be able to practice mental health and wellness strategies. As a 30-year head coaching veteran, Potter saw students coming to college without tools to battle life situations and the adversity that comes with it. The greatest tool a student, player or coach has is the brain and Potter shares practical strategies that can be implemented immediately.</p>
<p><span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>The Silent Epidemic</span>:</p>
<p>This keynote provides a real, relevant, and raw story of Potter’s personal experience with severe depression. As a society, we are speaking more about mental health, but we have a long way to go to get rid of the stigma surrounding mental illness. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in young people between the ages of 15 and 24. There can be victory over mental illness.</p>
