Eclipse in the Heartland - Doniphan County Total Solar Eclipse 2017
Did you know, that a solar eclipse is the lineup of the sun, moon, and earth and the moon, directly between the sun and earth casts a shadow on our planet?
Did you know, that the last time a total solar eclipse passed through the interior of the US was in 1918, which was almost a hundred years ago?
Did you know, that the closer you are to the center line within the path of totality, the longer the total solar eclipse will last?
Did you know, that you will need to be wearing special eclipse viewing glasses to be able to see any of the eclipse (about 3 hours) and that the only safe time to view the eclipse without the glasses will be during the totality phase of the solar eclipse?
And did you know, that Doniphan County is almost directly on the centerline of the path of totality, making one of the ultimate locations to view the eclipse?
Doniphan County will be experiencing a total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. Partial eclipse will start at 11:40 am. Totality will begin approximately at 1:05 pm and last for an entire 2 minutes and 38 seconds (2 minutes and 40 seconds being the longest that it can be viewed in the nation) until it goes back to being a partial eclipse and will end at 2:35 pm.
During the entire time of the partial eclipse, safety solar viewing glasses must be worn to avoid eye damage! The only time it will be safe to remove the glasses will be during the 2 minutes and 38 seconds of totality.
There is a good chance of thousands of visitors coming to Doniphan County the day of the event!
Right now there are efforts being done in Troy and Highland to accommodate the thousands that will be coming to our doorstep!
Our goal is to create a memorable and safe event for our community in Doniphan County and to show off our small town hospitality to our visitors!
There have been four main committees formed to help coordinate these planning efforts and sponsorship opportunities to show off area businesses and organizations on merchandise for eclipse glasses and official Doniphan County Solar Eclipse t-shirts. (See forms below)
Please help us to take full advantage of this once in a lifetime occassion and show off your Doniphan Pride by joining a committee or sponsoring the merchandise!
