Energy

Evergy provides most of the commercial electric service in Doniphan County with the exception of some rural areas which are served by the Doniphan Electric Cooperative. Both companies offer competitive rates, and state incentives to new facility locations within their service area.

Doniphan Electric Cooperative, Inc. has been serving the people of Doniphan County and areas in Atchison and Brown Counties for more than 57 years. They serve more than 1,500 consumers and have 500 miles of distribution line. Doniphan Electric Cooperative is proud of the fact that they have the lowest residential electric rates among R.E.C.s in Kansas, along with the lowest outage time per customer. They are eager and willing to serve any new consumer and will work with them in any way possible to provide the services they require.

Natural Gas

Kansas Gas is the main natural gas provider in Doniphan County. Please contact each city’s manager in Doniphan County for city specific information. Residents in rural areas can utilize propane gas as a heating fuel source.

Anyone who is planning a project that involves digging should always call 811 before they dig. This free service can prevent digging injuries and outages due to underground buried gas lines, power lines, telecommunication cables and more. One phone call to 811 from anywhere in Kansas will route your call to Kansas 811, which will alert owners of pipelines, telecommunication cables and power lines to mark their buried assets within at least two full working days, excluding weekends and holidays, of the request. Water

Water is supplied in Wathena and Elwood by Missouri-American Water Company. Water is abundantly available from the Missouri River and underground waterways provide additional sources. The company has a 38,000,000 gallon per day capacity. Wells provide water for Troy and Highland. Rural water districts serve the rural areas of the county.

Sewage

Sanitation is provided to each city by lagoons. Any user whose sewage contains abnormally high amounts of industrial wastes, toxic chemicals or other substances unsuited to the municipal treatment plant may be required to pre-treat such sewage prior to releasing it into the public sewer system. Please contact each city’s manager in Doniphan County for city specific information.

In the rural areas, septic systems are used. Permits for wastewater/septic systems are issued by the Northeast Kansas Environmental Services, and you should contact them at 785-985-2778 for further information.

Landfill

The landfill in Doniphan County is located at 1144 St Columbus Rd., Wathena, KS 66090. They are open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On the second Saturday of the month their hours are only 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m./noon. Any load brought in must be secured and tarped to avoid additional charges and a hard hat and vest are required by are on site. Contact them at 785-231-1452 for additional information.

Telecommunication

Telephone and internet telecommunication services are provided to Doniphan County by AT&T, CenturyLink, Rainbow Communications, Sprint, and major long distance companies.

Currently, there are over 80 licensed, long distance carriers in the state, each offering the latest in high technology service. The cost in Kansas to obtain and utilize these advanced applications is well below the national average.
